Prof. Dr. Celâl Şengör, retired faculty member of the Faculty of Mines at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), has achieved two major international distinctions in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of Earth sciences. Prof. Dr. Şengör was elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), one of the world’s leading scientific institutions, becoming the first Turkish scientist to receive this honor.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Şengör was awarded the 2025 Akiho Miyashiro Award by the Geological Society of Japan (JGS) for his pioneering research on Eurasian mountain belts and plate tectonics.

Through his influential work in geology and tectonics, Prof. Dr. Celâl Şengör has played a key role in shaping international scientific discourse. In addition to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he is also a member of several of the world’s most distinguished academies, including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Academia Europaea, and the Italian National Academy of Sciences (Accademia dei Lincei). These achievements once again highlight the global visibility and impact of Turkish Earth sciences.
