Support from NATO to Our Faculty Member

The project, whose principal investigator is Eurasia Institute of Earth Sciences, Department of Solid Earth Sciences faculty member Prof. Dr. Tolga Görüm and the total budget is 565 thousand Euros, was accepted and granted support by NATO.

The project titled "Post-earthquake Monitoring of Seismically-induced chains of Landslide Hazards (SHAKEN) for Protection of Critical Sites and Infrastructure", which will be carried out by our faculty member Prof. Dr. Tolga Görüm together with co-director Mischa Shattuck, co-director Dr. Hakan Tanyaş, co-director Prof. Dr. M. Lütfi Süzen and Dr. Syed Tanvir Shah, will be supported by the NATO SPS program.

The Project will examine the long-term effects of the geomorphologic dynamics of landslides triggered by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes on residential areas and critical engineering structures for three years.

With this multi-disciplinary project, it is aimed to develop early warning systems through the integration of different remote sensing approaches with extreme atmospheric event forecasts using machine learning methods.

The project will be conducted by Istanbul Technical University in cooperation with Istanbul Technical University, Middle East Technical University, AFAD, University of Twente, Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Lincoln Laboratory, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan from Turkey, the Netherlands, the USA and Pakistan.

NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme 
The NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme is an integral part of the NATO Emerging Security Challenges (ESC) Division. The SPS Programme develops and implements practical cooperation and enhances dialogue between NATO nations and Partner countries through capacity-building and security-related civil science, technology and innovation. All SPS activities contribute towards the Alliance’s Strategic Objectives, have a clear link to security and respond to at least one of the SPS Key Priorities.
